It all started when I was contacted by a long lost colleague who'd heard that I was now directing. She was looking for directors interested in making a motion poem for Motionpoems.org Season 7 - poems written by African American poets. I was once a poet, and am now a filmmaker. It was a no-brainer. The brief?  Choose a poem from their curated list and make a film that visualizes it any way you'd like. How many chances does one get to do exactly as one wishes when making a film?

For the Position of Abdelahim Hafez's Girl, explores the notions of belonging and freedom through the lens of a group of Muslim women who spend the day at the beach, surfing. The waves are the same for everybody.
